How the Florida recount nearly broke US politics - and its lessons for today

  • It was 249 v 246 on election night and it all came down to one state: Florida.
    (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
The networks said Al Gore had won it, then it was too close to call, then George W. Bush had won it - before rowing back once more.
The Florida recount saw American democracy tested to the limits, showing an electoral college v popular vote split, leaving the parties and the country divided for years to come.
We speak to George W. Bush’s trial lawyer, Barry Richard, along with The Washington Post’s Karen Tumulty and Protect Democracy’s Jon Steinham.

@@nateshini5832 No Iraq war for sure. As for flighting climate change, I imagine Gore would have had a tough time trying to pass any radical environmental legislation through the US system (think about how Obama struggled to get very basic health care reforms through). Though we would probably be in a better situation to where we are now.

A hand recount is clearly the Most accurate way to get the correct figures. Usually it's not necessary because the result is clear, but in this case it was close enough that small errors could change the result. How could the SC decide that it's unfair to hand recount? That makes no sense.

Fortunately, there has long existed a politically neutral 'electoral commission' in Canada that administers parliamentary elections at the federal level. Each province maintains a politically neutral 'electoral commission' that administers parliamentary elections at the provincial level. Moreover the 'electoral commissions' at both the federal level and the provincial level are empowered to oversee the drawing of legislative boundaries without any undue political influence. Consequently, the extraordinarily egregious political practice of hyperpartisan gerrymandering in Canada is explicitly forbidden.

One thing you have to understand is the Florida republican party is the best branch in the country. While changing demographics, northern migration, and subruban shifts towards democrats they just keep finding ways to win and since 2018 have controlled all major statewide offices and a solid majority in the state legislature and house of representatives seats.

Barry Richard HONESTLY thinks that it doesn’t really matters what the result would have been if the full recount had happened?!?! We could have had a different president, and most likely a completely different invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq! I was only 7 years old when this happened, and lived in extremely blue state of Connecticut at the time (and NOW I live it Florida where major voter suppression STILL exists in a variety of forms), and I’ve been majorly pissed off about the Supreme Court halting the full recount for 20 years!!! And now that I’ve been an active voter for almost 10 years...I’ve only seen the corruption and disenfranchisement in our electoral system grow out of control!!!

The electoral college was designed to keep the United States together.
Without it the more populous states would always decide who the president was.
The calls to scrap it in favour of the overall electorate would mean that the East and West coasts would impose a president on the central and southern states. This would inevitably lead to calls from some states to secede.
The problem is a fundamental one with federal government.
